Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition)(11.26) —I just want to say that I think I heard a ghost of Christmas past. I am surprised that a Government that has its public relations so well organised did not have the clanking of chains hollowly coming from the foyer. Mr President, may I on behalf of the Opposition also thank all the people mentioned by Senator Walsh for their service to the Parliament and to the Senate over the last 12 months. I particularly thank a group mentioned by him, the Clerks, and in particular I thank Harry Evans, the Clerk who was assigned to work with the Opposition, for the very ready assistance that was always provided. I hope that that does not damage his future career in the civil service. In fact at all levels, as Senator Walsh has indicated, we were given great service and on behalf of the Opposition I also extend our thanks to all of those people.

I also wish all the members of the Government, as well as members of the Opposition-and you, of course, Mr President-a very happy Christmas. I hope, as Senator Walsh hopes, that we come back rested. I hope that the Government comes back repenting some of its more obvious follies but I do hope that for all of us it will be a time when we can put aside politics for at least a few days and enjoy a little normal Australian good cheer at one of the most pleasant times of the year in this country. I am happy on this occasion to join with Senator Walsh in the expressions of view he has just put before us. I wish everybody a wonderful Christmas break.
