To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled. The petition of the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully showeth that:

1. Australia is one of the few industrial nations which has unlimited access to unemployment benefits without requiring some return to the community;

2. the present method of paying unemployment benefits as ``money for nothing'' is individually destructive, demoralising and socially unjust;

3. schemes requiring community work to be performed in return for unemployment benefits, such as the Workfare system in the United States, are explicitly endorsed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention No. 44 on Unemployment;

`Work for the dole' schemes are supported by the overwhelming majority of the community, especially young people, and have recently been supported by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU).

Your petitioners most humbly pray that the Senate in Parliament assembled should:

Legislate to introduce a system which provides community work which must be undertaken in return for unemployment benefits.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
