(Question No. 1423)

Senator Jones asked the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 10 October 1986:

(1) Has the Minister for Foreign Affairs' attention been drawn to an article in the Courier Mail of 3 September 1986, headlined ``Ex-Nazi welcome to visit, says Joh'' (meaning the Premier of Queensland).

(2) Does the Australian Government have any information in regard to the wartime activities of Herr Strauss, now Premier of Bavaria, in particular, does this information contain any reference to any wartime activities that involved any Australian service personnel or any other member of the Allied forces.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Foreign Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) My attention has been drawn to such an article in the Courier Mail of 30 September 1986.

(2) My Department has no such information. Given that there is no allegation that Herr Strauss was a war criminal, it is unlikely that Government records would be concerned with his wartime activities.
