(Question No. 1497)

Senator Mason asked the Minister representing the Prime Minister, upon notice, on 14 November 1986:

(1) Was the British Government's case to stop publication of a book by Mr Peter Wright, a former MI5 agent, discussed in Cabinet this week.

(2) Whatever the answer, has the Government decided to support the British Government in its attempt in an Australian civil action to stop publication.

Senator Button —The Prime Minister has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The case was discussed by Ministers.

(2) The Government decided that a senior Australian official would give evidence as to Australia's national interest in the case.
