(Question No. 1429)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

Does the Minister for Territories consider the Cocos Island hospital facilities, and the maintenance of the hospital, to be adequate.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Yes. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands hospital is equipped to handle most types of medical emergency. The Health Service staff comprise a Doctor, four Nursing Sisters and a Health Aide. There are facilities for surgery and X-Ray examinations. Patients requiring treatment which the hospital facilities and medical staff are unable to provide are evacuated by air to Perth.
