Senator LEWIS(4.51) —I just want to say a few words about this eighty-first report of the Senate Standing Committee on Regulations and Ordinances. This report is, in fact, the sixth report which Senator Cooney has tabled in just on 12 months since he took over as Chairman of this Committee. It seemed to me that there was a possibility that some former senators might be out there today listening to this debate. I think in particular of such fellows as Ian Wood and Jim Cavanagh-and I am sure that all honourable senators would like to send their best wishes to both of them. I think also of other former senators who have served on this marvellous Senate Committee.

Senator MacGibbon —Yes, but what does your Committee do?

Senator LEWIS —I just want to say to them that Senator Cooney follows in all the finest and best traditions that they established in regard to this Committee, that he takes a very powerful approach towards Ministers who do not want to comply with the requests of the Senate Committee, and we have repeatedly on that Committee been successful. I am sure that those former senators who might be listening to this debate would be delighted to know of the standards continuing to be set by the present Chairman of this Committee.
