Senator Button —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) According to data supplied by IDAPS, in the first 6 months of 1986 there were 201,244 new passenger motor vehicles registered. Registrations for the same period in 1985 were 252,724 units; 1984, 219,620 units; 1983, 195,873 units; and 1982, 223,643 units.

(2) There were 70,455 new commercial vehicles registered in the first 6 months of 1986. Registrations for the corresponding period in 1985 were 99,588 units; 1984, 92,718 units; 1983, 78,632 units; and 1982, 84,435 units.

(3) Fleet vehicle registrations in the first 6 months of 1986 were 85,827 passenger motor vehicles and 45,272 commercial vehicles. The corresponding figures for 1985 were 99,102 passenger vehicles, 57,344 commercial; for 1984, 87,063 passenger vehicles, 47,931 commercial; for 1983, 72,443 passenger vehicles, 37,297 commercial; and for 1982, 95,531 passenger vehicles and 47,789 commercial. Fleet vehicles are those vehicles registered as Government, Hospitals and Institutions or Business ownership. Except for 1982, the passenger vehicle fleet figures do not include Western Australian registrations which are not separately recorded by ownership category because of State Government confidentiality requirements. The 1982 passenger vehicle figure, adjusted to exclude Western Australian registrations, is 86,954 units.
