(Question No. 1262)

Senator Foreman asked the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, upon notice, on 20 August 1986:

For the first 6 months of 1986

(1) What percentage did fleet purchases of motor vehicles comprise of total sales in this period; and

(2) How does this figure compare with percentages for 1985, 1984, 1983 and 1982.

Senator Button —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) According to data supplied by IDAPS, in the first 6 months of 1986 43.3% (85,827 units) of the registrations of new passenger motor vehicles were fleet vehicles, where the term fleet is used to include ownership groups Government, Hospitals and Institutions or Business categories. This does not include Western Australian registrations which are not separately recorded by ownership category because of State Government confidentiality requirements.

(2) The percentage of registrations of new passenger motor vehicles entering fleets for the first 6 months of 1982 was 42.7%; in 1983, 37,0%; in 1984, 40.6% and in 1985 40.1%.

The percentage of registrations of new passenger motor vehicles entering fleets for the full year was 43.4% in 1982, 38.4% in 1983, 40.4% in 1984 and 40.2% in 1985.
