Senator MACKLIN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) expresses its deep regret at the Federal Government's decision to support vital loans through the International Monetary Fund to help prop up the economy of Chile under the Pinochet regime;

(b) notes that other Western Governments, unlike Australia, either abstained from voting, or voted against the proposal in protest against Chile's military Government, widely acknowledged in the international community as the most violent and repressive in South America;

(c) regrets that Australian diplomats have had to work overtime to explain to other democratic countries Australia's extraordinary decision; and

(d) calls on the Government to take the steps necessary to make amends for this preposterous and embarrassing decision.
