To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled. The Petition of the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully showeth that:

Whereas the fringe benefits tax will place a costly and unfair burden on independent schools.

The fringe benefits tax will have the most damaging impact upon schools which provide boarding accommodation for children as they are also required to provide accommodation for staff members to live in and supervise the boarders. Independent schools have limited resources and this additional impost will ultimately have to be passed on to parents, many of whom are already heavily committed to the financing of their children's education.

Your petitioners therefore call upon the Parliament to recognise that the future of Australia depends upon the education given to its children and to exempt schools from the operation of the fringe benefits tax.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
