Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy)(11.05) —It is formally the case that a new job of Race Discrimination Commissioner is created and that the old job is abolished. No decision has been taken as to whether the encumbent of the old job should take on the new job with a different title; but, as always with a formal change in description of a statutory office, the opportunity is there for that to occur if the Government so decides. I repeat that no decision has been taken. By contrast, the statutory position of Sex Discrimination Commissioner remains unchanged and as a result it is reasonable to assume that, unless for personal reasons that Commissioner should want to resign, there will be continuity in that particular office because it is a position created under the Sex Discrimination Act which is not being changed in any relevant respect by this legislation today.
