Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(10.54) —I became aware of this strange system 20 years ago when I furnished a doctor's surgery by buying all the furniture at a Department of Supply sale, as it was in those days. Mind you, that was before I became a senator. All I know is that the Department of Local Government and Administrative Services is the department responsible for these disposals. The Department purchases things which are over the tender threshold of $20,000. Most of the items mentioned by Senator Michael Baume were not over that threshold. The Department arranges for the sale of excess goods from each department. I do not know anything about each of the individual items. However, I can assure honourable senators that this makes for good Hansard reading. As to the question of why it happens, all I can say at five to eleven tonight, having been here since 8 o'clock this morning, is that I'm buggered if I know.
