Senator MESSNER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) condemns the Federal Government for its irresponsible and wasteful expenditure of taxpayers' money on grants and other funding to fringe community groups and union bodies;

(b) records the Opposition's view that these funding arrangements have not the full sanction of the Australian people;

(c) seeks an explanation from the Government as to why funding programs such as the community employment program and the art in working life program have been politicised in their objectives by grants made available to dissident fringe groups and union bodies;

(d) notes with alarm the apparent hypocrisy of the Government in handing out funds to these groups in light of its supposed restraint in fiscal expenditures; and

(e) requests the Government to review its funding to these organisations and freely make available to the public the precise details of all grants that have been approved to date.
