(Question No. 1436)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

(1) Does the Federal Government envisage any change in, or additions to charter services, in view of Christmas Island's attempt to encourage tourists, in relation to the present charter air services to Christmas Island, that is the Malaysian Airlines Kuala Lumpur to Christmas Island service, and the charter from Perth to Christmas Island to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and return.

(2) Does the Government intend to extend air services to Christmas and/or the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to include a regular public transport (RPT) air service.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Terri- tories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) There are no additions planned to the weekly air charter services to Christmas Island from Perth and a South-East Asian Port.

Tenders have been called for the provision of a weekly service from a South-East Asian port to Christmas Island. The successful tenderer may not necessarily operate from Kuala Lumpur as at present. Negotiations are being held on a new long-term charter for flights operating out of Perth.

(2) The developer proposing a hotel-casino complex on Christmas Island is seeking the establishment of RPT air services to the Island. The Departments of Terri- tories and Aviation have been involved in discussions with the developer and see no major obstacles to the issue of a licence for an RPT air-service.

The existing charter services will be re-evaluated in the light of the developments in RPT services.
