Senator HAINES —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment aware of the fact that road building equipment and workers were present in the Lemonthyme in Tasmania as recently as last Friday? Can the Minister say whether these moves to extend the road as announced by the Tasmanian Forests Minister last week are in breach of the memorandum of understanding? Further, can the Minister say whether the small fire burning near the Lemonthyme road works in the middle of last week was lit as part of the management plan for the area? Finally, will the Minister urge the Prime Minister to accept the invitation extended to him by the Tasmanian Wilderness Society to visit the Tasmanian National Estate forest areas to see at first hand what the effect of logging in these areas will be?

Senator RYAN —I do not have any information on the particular details that Senator Haines is seeking, but I can assure her that it is our Government's intention and, indeed, the Prime Minister's intention to take whatever steps we can take to protect national rainforests in areas such as the area referred to in Tasmania. I will pass the particular question on to the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment.

Senator Haines —Is there any chance of getting an early reply as there is some urgency.

Senator RYAN —I understand that it is urgent but I do not have any information, so I will pass the question on and get the information as soon as possible.
