(Question No. 1055)


Senator Sanders asked the Minister representing the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment, upon notice, on 2 May 1986:

(1) What are the numbers of kangaroos and wallabies killed, state by state, on a non-commercial basis, for the period 31 December 1984 to 31 December 1985.

(2) What are the numbers and quantities of the numbered tags returned from the State of Victoria after processing, on a state by state basis, for the calendar years 1984 and 1985.

(3) How many kangaroo processing works are currently operating in the State of Victoria, and what companies are licensed to operate these works.

(4) What funds were expended by the Commonwealth Government on the visit to Australia by Hemmo Muntingh, Rapporteur for the European Parliament; and of these funds, how much was spent on travel, how much on air fares, and how much on entertainment.


Senator Ryan —The Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Table 1 gives the information on non-commercial kangaroo killing for 1985 as provided by State and Territory wildlife authorities.

(2) the Director of the Victorian Fisheries and Wildlife Service has advised that this information is not required to be furnished to the Victorian Government. It is understood that other States do not require used tags to be returned from the State of Victoria.

(3) The Director of the Victorian Fisheries and Wildlife Service has advised that the following ten companies are licensed to operate kangaroo processing works.

Allelemdjian & Co. Pty Ltd, F. Bottaro, Clinkat Aust. Pty Ltd, J. S. Conway, Total Furcare, Fairweather Fur Dressers & Dyers Pty Ltd, Oberon Tanning Co., Super Leather, Wattle Glen Pet Food Pty Ltd, Vameyre Pty Ltd.

1. No separate species details kept.

2. Section 121 licences and property tags issued for macropods on a species by species basis essentially in the non-commercial zone.

3. figures given are for numbers permitted to be killed not number actually killed.

4. No species breakdown, but includes 1,436 M. fuliginosus on Kangaroo Island.

5. No records maintained. W.A. Department of Conservation and Land Management advise figure is considered not to be significant.

6. Estimated by questionnaires, S.E. +- 51,877 for M. rufogriseus and S.E. +- 49,688 for T. billardierii.

7. Includes M. giganteus 7,550 and M. fuliginosus 1,470 separately identified.

8. Additionally, M. agilis is unprotected in the N.T. north of 15`S apart from national parks, reserves and Arnhem Land. No estimate is available for the take of this species, however, no major shooting was known to occur in 1985.

9. Taken under Scientific Permit.
