Senator VALLENTINE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) notes with concern the detention of 4 Australian citizens on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean after the sinking of their ship, the Southern Raider, on 9 October 1986;

(b) notes too, the allegation of John Chadderton, the skipper from Perth, that their real offence lay in going too close to secret preparations by the French Government to establish a nuclear test site on Kerguelen Island;

(c) commends the Australian Government for its continued opposition to French nuclear tests outside metropolitan France; and

(d) calls on the Australian Government to ascertain from the French Government whether or not it is developing Kerguelen Island as a nuclear test site after destroying Mururoa Atoll over the last 20 years;
