Senator WALSH (Minister for Finance)(9.13) —In the days when I read a bit more agricultural literature than I read now, I thought the general supposition was that it took about 10 years for fairly clear research findings to be actually common practice in agriculture. I do not know what is the reason for that. I suppose it is partly the lack of readily available information and partly the natural conservatism of farmers-some might even be unkind enough to say in some cases the stupidity of farmers. The Commonwealth Department of Primary Industry does not accept any responsibility for extension work as that is a function of the State departments.
