Senator PARER(8.31) —I would like to follow up the remarks made by Senator Short. I also refer the Minister to a question which I asked in an Estimates committee hearing but to which so far I have not received a reply. I believe that the question is critical and is a question in which everyone is particularly interested. The question I asked in respect of the fringe benefits tax was: What was the estimate by the Department of the Treasury or the Australian Taxation Office of the revenue that would be collected from Federal, State and local governments and their statutory authorities and the private sector? The taxation officials at the Estimates committee hearing, either by design or whatever, were unable to answer many of the questions asked. The way in which those officials treated the members of the Estimates committee was quite appalling. I hope that I do not see a repetition of it in the future. I repeat: The question I asked was: What was the estimate by the Government of the revenue expected to come from Federal, State and local governments and their statutory authorities and the private sector?
