Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(4.28) —I wish to announce that the Government will oppose Senator Messner's amendment. Actually, we oppose Senator Haines's amendment because she says rude things about us and condemns us. We oppose Senator Messner's amendment because he says ruder things about both of us. However, he also says that he wishes the Senate to support the return of what he calls an equitable retirement income system which supports self-provision and does not promote dependency on governments during retirement. That, I assume, can only be a return to the system of an incomes test which was introduced by a previous conservative Government, which was inequitable for all the reasons that I have outlined. Therefore, we will oppose that amendment also.

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT (Senator Scott) —The question now is:

That the words proposed to be left out of Senator Haines's amendment by Senator Messner's amendment be left out.

Question resolved in the negative.

Amendment negatived.

Question put:

That the words proposed to be inserted (Senator Haines's amendment) be inserted.
