Senator HEARN —Is the Minister representing the Minister for Veterans' Affairs aware that some misleading newspaper reports today have caused alarm among war widows, veterans and disability pensioners who now fear they will lose their pensions because of changes announced last night by the Treasurer?

Senator RYAN —Yes, it is unfortunate that several newspapers, including the Australian and the Melbourne Age, have quite wrongly published material which says that war widows and disability pensions are to be cut. This is not correct. The Treasurer stressed in all news releases and public announcements that no existing war widows or disability pensions will be affected by the changes to the repatriation system. I can reassure those pensioners that this is still the case and that they should not be alarmed by misleading stories appearing in some media.
