Senator PRIMMER(8.26) —When I took over the role of Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on National Resources, I immediately became aware that that Committee had been giving some thought to the crown-of-thorns starfish and to whether the Committee should take on such a reference. However, very shortly afterwards I became aware that the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Conservation was also giving consideration to taking that reference aboard. On 30 April 1985 Mr Peter Milton, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee, sent to me a letter which I think I should read into the Hansard. It states:

Dear Senator Primmer, Following a meeting with the Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the Committee has decided to investigate the impact of the Crown of Thorns Starfish and erosion from the Daintree Road on the Reef.

The Committee discussed in detail Senator Missen's notice of motion and the areas outlined in the motion will be included in the investigation.

The Committee will be writing to conservationists, the scientific community, relevant State and Commonwealth Authorities and the tourist industry. In addition we will be seeking information on studies and research conducted overseas.

While a detailed programme has yet to be decided discussions and inspections in Queensland have been scheduled for when the House rises.

Yours sincerely Peter Milton Chairman
