(Question No. 114)


Senator Puplick asked the Minister representing the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, upon notice, on 20 March 1985:

(1) Did the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism receive a request from the Australian Duty Free Operators Association for a copy of a report prepared by an inter-departmental committee chaired by the Minister's Department on the subject of Inward Duty Free Shopping; if so:

(a) did the Minister write to the President of the Australian Duty Free Operators Association (Mr P. Spies) on 18 October 1984 and inform him, inter alia, that 'the sponsoring Departments did not proceed with a report on the subject', and

(b) does the Annual Report 1983-84 of the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism state (at page 110), in regard to this inter-departmental committee on Inward Duty Free Shopping, that: 'The Inter-Departmental Committee completed its report . . .'

(2) If the answer to both (1) (a) and (b) above is yes, which statement is correct.


Senator Ryan —The Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Yes (a) and (b): Yes.

(2) A specific report per se was not prepared by the IDC on this matter. The report referred to in the Department's Annual Report 1983-84 relates to the inputs by Departments into the preparation of the Cabinet submission.
