(Question No. 94)


Senator Bolkus asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 20 March 1985:

(1) What Australian army personnel were stationed in Britain during 1983.

(2) Can the Minister for Defence detail the times at which Australian Army personnel visited Britain during 1983; and the purpose of those visits.

(3) What Australian Army personnel were in Britain when American cruise missiles first arrived there in 1983.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) (i) 8 members posted to military staff appointments; (ii) 51 members either under training or posted as staff to training establishments; and (iii) 23 exchange personnel.

(2) (i) (a) Aug-Dec 83 Exercise LONG LOOK-An annual short term individual exchange of personnel between the British and Australian armies-designed to broaden the military experience and knowledge of selected Army personnel; (b) 15 May-15 Jun 83 Exercise NORTHSTAR/SOUTHERN CROSS-An annual reciprocal sub-unit exchange between Australia and the United Kingdom which is designed to increase expertise; and

(ii) 24 Jan-27 Feb 83-Inter allied Conference of Reserve Forces; 3-28 Jun 83-Project RAVEN Review (deals with the contractual buying of Army's new range of combat net radios); 20 May-19 Jun 83-Counter terrorist and Special Action Forces Operations; 16 Jul-1 Aug 83-Commonwealth Survey Conference; 24 Sep-10 Oct 83-Update Military Transport Doctrine; 30 Sep-17 Oct 83-Leopard Tank Users Technical Working Group Meeting; 14-30 Oct 83-6th Army to Army Talks; 6-22 Oct 83-Electrical Power Sources Meeting; 8 Oct-9 Nov 83-Chief of the General Staff Visit; 4-21 Nov 83-Army Operation Research Meeting; 2-27 Nov 83-Air Defence Systems Discussions.

(3) (i) 8 members posted to military staff appointments; (ii) 43 members either under training or posted as staff to training establishments; and (iii) 23 exchange personnel.
