(Question No. 123)


Senator Peter Rae asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 21 March 1985:

Was an inter-departmental committee (IDC) established in May 1983 to review the financial objectives and financial structure of Telecom and Australia Post; if so:

(a) what were the terms of reference for the IDC;

(b) has the IDC reported; if not, what are the reasons for failure to report after a period of almost 2 years since the IDC was established, and when can it be expected that it will report; and

(c) will the Minister for Communications table the IDC report in the Parliament.


Senator Walsh —The Minister for Communications has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

Yes, (see p. 164 1983-84 Budget Paper No. 1).

(a) Broadly the terms of reference are to review existing legislative provisions relating to the financial structure and financial objectives of Telecom and Australia Post and the relationship between the authorities and the Government.

(b) No. Officials are still considering the matter and hope to finalise a report at an early date.

(c) No.
