Senator CHIPP (Leader of the Australian Democrats) —by leave-Mr President, I claim to have been misrepresented and wish to make a personal explanation. I refer to an article published in the 'Stay in Touch' column of the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday. The article repeats a rumour-to quote the newspaper-from an allegedly very senior source, that I intend to retire soon. I state that, God willing, it is my intention to lead the Australian Democrats at the next Federal election scheduled for 1987 and to remain in Parliament for a significant period after that election. I thank the newspaper for printing a semi-retraction this morning but at the same time express my disappointment that a reputable and responsible newspaper such as the Sydney Morning Herald will publish an unsubstantiated rumour-on its own admission-about myself or any other member of this Parliament when all of us are just one telephone call away from the reporter and the reporter can verify or otherwise such a rumour.
