Senator ROBERT RAY —Does the Minister representing the Special Minister of State recall the Queensland Premier being highly critical of the Federal Government when it supported an increase in the size of the House of Representatives? Is it a fact that the House of Representatives has increased in size by only 18 per cent since 1949 compared with a 24 per cent increase in the size of the Queensland Parliament in the same period? Has the Minister noted the intention of the Queensland Premier to increase the size of the Queensland Parliament by a further seven seats? Does this increase indicate that the Queensland Premier has changed his mind? If not, can the Minister lay to rest rumours that the Premier has double standards bordering on hypocrisy?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I have noted the matters raised by Senator Ray. As usual, I am confident in his figures and I am sure that the statistics and the percentages he has mentioned are perfectly accurate. I am inclined to agree with his final assertion that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Queensland Premier has changed his capacity for the most extraordinary and vulgar double standards when it comes to matters of principle.
