Senator BJELKE-PETERSEN —by leave-I present the following petition which is not in conformity with the Standing Orders from 276 citizens praying that the Parliament subsidise the Australian sugar industry and grant loans on a low interest rate:

To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

The petition of the undersigned in the state of Queensland respectfully showeth that due to the slump in the price of sugar on the world market, cane farmers are unable to meet their commitments, and are unable to support their families. Cane farmers are in great need of assistance.

Your petitioners therefore, humbly pray that the Parliament in Canberra will consider the grave situation and endeavour to remedy same by subsidising our Sugar Industry, and grant loans on a low interest rate; please help by positive action.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
