Senator Chaney asked the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, upon notice, on 27 February 1985:

(1) What is the average effective rate of protection for manufacturing industry.

(2) What is the average effective rate of protection for manufacturing industry excluding the passenger motor vehicle industry.

(3) What is the average effective rate of protection for manufacturing industry excluding the textiles, clothing and footwear industries.

(4) What is the average effective rate of protection for manufacturing industry, excluding the passenger motor vehicles and textiles, clothing and footwear industries.


Senator Button —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

The Industries Assistance Commission has calculated the following rates of assistance for the year 1981-82. More recent figures should be available shortly.

(1) The average effective rate of assistance to manufacturing industry in 1981-82 was 26 per cent.

(2) The average effective rate of assistance to manufacturing excluding the passenger motor vehicle industry was 23 per cent in 1981-82.

(3) The average effective rate of assistance to manufacturing excluding the textiles, clothing and footwear industries in 1981-82 was 20 per cent.

(4) The average effective rate of assistance for manufacturing excluding the passenger motor vehicles and the textiles, clothing and footwear industries was 17 per cent in 1981-82.
