Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition) —by leave-The deficiency which bothers honourable senators in the procedures we currently have is that there is no list on Thursday or on General Business day to show the papers still available for comment. Honourable senators would be more inclined to follow the procedure which you have drawn to their attention three or four times, and which I agree reflects the sessional order, if the practice were adopted of re-issuing the list of papers on the day. We are all trying to do 15 things at once. We are not as efficient as we would like to be and it is terribly easy for something to slip out of sight. If we had that practice of re-issuing on that day a list of all the papers which have not been dealt with, it would encourage people to follow the procedures of the Senate. It would not mean a lot of work because we would use the old list.

The DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Such a paper is available to the Chair. I will raise with the President whether it would be possible to circulate that to all senators. That would solve the problem. Otherwise we will have a succession of motions every time papers are not dealt with. It would probably solve the difficulty.
