Senator BUTTON (Leader of the Government in the Senate) —by leave-I present the following petition which is not in conformity with the Standing Orders, relating to the rate of tariff on imported fertilisers, from 222 petitioners:

We the undersigned, each being a member of one of the following Trade Unions: Amalgamated Metals, Foundry and Shipwrights Union, Building Workers Industry Union, Electrical Trades Union, Federated Clerks Union, Federated Engine Drivers and Firemens Association, Federated Iron Workers Association, Painters and Decorators Union, and all being employees of the Phosphate Co-operative Company of Australia do humbly pray that the Federal Government takes immediate action to protect the Australian fertilizer manufacturing industry from imported, manufactured, Hi-Analysis Fertilizer.

We feel that for the Australian Fertilizer Manufacturing Industry to remain viable and continue to remain a reliable employer, immediate protective action must be taken by the Federal Government in the form of:

(a) The immediate implementation of a realistic tariff on imported, manufactured, Hi-Analysis Fertilizer.

(b) An immediate freight subsidy for Australian Fertilizer manufacturers so as to ease raw material importation costs of Christmas and Nauru Island Phosphate Rock.

We humbly pray that this petition is given urgent consideration.
