The following answer to a question was circulated:

Senator Button —On 27 February 1985 (Hansard Page 244) Senator Foreman asked me, as Minister representing the Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Youth Affairs, a question without notice relating to recommendations in the report of the Kirby Committee of Inquiry into Labour Market Programs concerning the Australian Youth Service. The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Youth Affairs has provided me with the following additional information in answer to Senator Foreman's question of 27 February:

The Kirby Committee sees an Australian Youth Service as providing a focal point for co-ordinating local youth services and a place where young people can go for advice, assistance and referral. The Committee has recommended that there should be widespread consultation on the role and function of an Australian Youth Service.

The Government has agreed that the implications of that recommendation need to be fully examined and has established an AYS consultative team consisting of senior officers of the Office of Youth Affairs and the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations. This consultative team is currently consulting in each State and Territory with all parties and will soon be calling for written submissions.

The consultative team's report will then be considered by the Government.
