Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition) —I seek leave to make a statement under standing order 408 on behalf of Opposition senators.

Leave granted.

Senator CHANEY —Rather than have the situation where all Opposition senators have to associate themselves with remarks similar to those made by Senator Rae, I would say that we all repudiate the view that we are supporters of Pol Pot. It sits oddly in the mouths of Ministers when their own Minister for Foreign Affairs has been specifically pursuing inquiries about the extent to which the Vietnamese are prepared to deal with elements of the Pol Pot regime. I think the whole thing is simply a political slur on the part of Senator Chipp and members of the Government. On behalf of the Opposition, I repudiate it entirely.
