Senator COLLARD(10.13) —I wish to put on record that we cannot support the amendments moved by the Australian Democrats because they are not factual. The Queensland Government did not make too many rash promises to the sugar industry prior to the last election. Indeed, it has done far more than any promises it has made. It has provided help through the Rural Reconstruction Board and through the Agricultural Bank. A Treasury loan of $10m has been made to the co-operative mills, a sum of $175,000 has gone to the sugar industry review and there has been an increased payment to the No. 1 pool from $160 to $180 a tonne. Therefore, my Party cannot possibly support the Democrats' amendments. The amendments would alter the motion so as to make it blatantly untrue. It would not reflect the situation in Queensland in respect of any promises made by the Queensland Government to the industry.
