Senator REID(6.52) —I spoke on this report the other day and I am now speaking in continuation. I will not go over that ground again, but will just reiterate that there is a problem in Canberra with the number of nursing home beds for the frail aged. I have placed the facts on the record. I appreciate that the Government is short of funds-we keep hearing that-but let it work on a proposition to make it attractive to other people to put money into nursing homes so that beds can become available in this Territory in particular. Let it get on with the establishment of the now twice-promised Office of Aged Care and spend some time working out whether the money presently being spent in the area of caring for the aged is being spent wisely or whether adjustments should be made. The elderly are virtually powerless when they get to that stage and I think we need to make an effort to see that they are cared for in the best possible way and in the best possible conditions.
