Senator MESSNER —Can the Minister for Community Services confirm a report in the Australian Financial Review of 6 February that the Government was considering a special interdepartmental committee report on occupational superannuation which indicated that it had reached substantial agreement with the Australian Council of Trade Unions on the extension of superannuation as part of the forthcoming wage case? In view of the significance of this report and the ramifications for the income security of retiring Australians, given that they have been subjected to two years of anxiety and confusion, will the Government table this report so that it can be studied in some detail?

Senator GRIMES —Yes, an interdepartmental committee was looking at occupational superannuation. Yes, there is a report which the Government has been looking at. I did not see the report in the Financial Review. I certainly know nothing of any agreement with the ACTU concerning the extension of occupational superannuation as part of any wage case or wage settlement. I will seek an answer to that question from the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations.

As to the matter of tabling such a report, it is not the custom to do so. I will discuss that matter with the Treasurer, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, who is the Minister Assisting the Treasurer and who has had a particular interest in that matter.
