Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy) —by leave-Because of a communication difficulty that occurred between the Department of Trade and the Department of Resources and Energy during the preparation of the brief from which I answered Senator Richardson today, it appears that I inadvertently misstated the position when reading from that brief. I referred in general terms to the Minister for Trade (Mr Dawkins) having approved the rollover of last year's prices of certain non-coking coal contracts. The position is not as clear-cut as my answer suggested. Negotiations are still going on over a broad range of coal qualities and it is premature at this stage to be definitive about the final outcome of those commercial negotiations. What I should have said and what I say now is that with ministerial approval a company has already settled on a rollover basis. I hope that clarifies the record and will not cause any confusion.

Senate adjourned at 6.18 p.m.
