Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy) —by leave-In order to clarify matters on the record, should there be any doubt in anyone's mind as to what is going on, the reasons for the Government rejecting the term of the motion moved by the Leader of the Opposition, Senator Chaney, were spelled out at length by me in yesterday's debate and may be found at pages 130 to 131 of yesterday's Hansard. The reasons in turn advanced by Senator Chaney for now rejecting the terms of my amendment, containing as it does explicit and unequivocal support for the ANZUS alliance, are a wholly unconvincing and implausible explanation of what can only be construed as a rapid retreat from commitment to that alliance on the part of the tories.
