Senator GRIMES (Minister for Community Services)(4.24) —I have no knowledge of the matter raised by Senator Colston. I will refer the matter to my colleague, Senator Ryan, for a response. My comment about Senator Austin Lewis's remark about the Wang Computer company moving to Canberra and its being something to do with the Canberra Development Board arose out of the fact that I have some knowledge of why the Wang company came here. In fact, if Senator Lewis goes to the company's building he will see a big plaque on the wall which says that I opened the building. Wang in fact came here as part of the offset provisions of the considerable contract it received to equip the Department of Social Security with a new data processing system. I have had close contacts with the Wang company. I have had great respect for the Wang company. I continue to do so. However, I was interested to note the example that Senator Lewis used. I assure Senator Reid that that does not mean that I do not appreciate the efforts of the Canberra Development Board or the need for a Canberra Development Board. I am not prejudiced in any way. She knows very well that I am certainly not prejudiced against anything in Canberra. We have all made speeches at some time in the past about moneys that have been expended in Canberra; I think even Senator Lewis has made such contributions. They may all come back to haunt us at some time but I would not delve into the past to see what sort of things had been said.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Senate adjourned at 4.25 p.m.
