Senator HARRADINE —I wish to be associated with the motion which was moved by the Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Button). Along with a number of other members of an official parliamentary delegation to India, I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs Gandhi and of discussing with her a very wide range of issues. It was clear that she had very firm views on certain matters and she was able eloquently to express those views and to meet many of the arguments that were put forward in discussions at that time. When any leader of any nation meets such a fate, particularly a leader who was attempting to ensure that democracy be maintained in a wide and diverse community, it is a sad thing for all democracies. As such, I believe that it is particularly appropriate for the Senate to support this motion and to pass on its condolences to the Indian people.

Question resolved in the affirmative, honourable senators standing in their places.
