(Question No. 1213)

Senator McIntosh asked the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 8 October:

Will the Australian Government make clear its commitment to the Contadora draft peace treaty already endorsed by Nicaragua, given recent reports which indicated that 4 Contadora group countries (El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Costa Rica) are being pressed by the United States administration not to sign the draft treaty unless substantial amendments to it are made (see question without notice and answer thereto, Hansard, 4 October 1984, page 1210).

Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Foreign Affairs has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

In answer to Senator McIntosh's question of 4 October, the Attorney-General noted that I made a public statement calling for the implementation of the revised Contadora treaty during my recent visit to Central America. Australia's position has since been discussed with a number of concerned governments.
