(Question No. 1221)

Senator Reynolds asked the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, upon notice, on 16 October 1984:

Will the Minister for Veterans' Affairs assure the Parliament that, given the Government's commitment to the promotion of affirmative action programs and the elimination of discrimination based on sex, marital status and pregnancy, these principles will be adhered to during the recruitment of staff generally for the Veterans' Review Board.

Senator Gietzelt —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

I can assure Senator Reynolds that the principles she mentioned were adhered to . I am pleased to say that the new Veterans' Review Board will have eight women members, three of whom will be senior members. I am hopeful that even more women will be appointed to senior positions in the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the repatriation determining authorities in the future.
