Senator Reid asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 4 October 1984:

In respect of the Minister's Department and statutory authorities responsible to the Minister:

(a) how many motor vehicles did they own before 2 March 1983;

(b) how many motor vehicles do they now own;

(c) how many motor vehicles have they purchased since 2 March 1983;

(d) what type, size and make of motor vehicles have they purchased;

(e) what was the individual and total cost of these vehicles; and

(f) for what purpose were the vehicles purchased.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(a) to (f) My Department and statutory authorities within my portfolio, except the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the Office of Narcotics Control Bureau (ONCB), do not own motor vehicles. Vehicles in use are hired from or through the Department of Administrative Services.

In respect of the AFP, JTF and the ONCB, the information sought by the honourable senator is:

(a) AFP-25; ONCB-nil; JTF-16.

(b) AFP-42; ONCB-2; JTF-16.

(c) AFP-17; ONCB-2; JTF-9.

The Joint Task Force is funded equally by the Commonwealth and State government . The motor vehicles are initially paid for and registered to the Department of the Special Minister of State. The State government then refunds half the money.
