Senator JESSOP(11.08) — I rise to support the seriousness of the matter Senator Townley has raised with respect to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation. I have also heard that the attitude of ASIO to surveillance and security has been somewhat affected because of the attitudes of the Attorney-General (Senator Gareth Evans) in certain respects. I think it behoves us to examine the matter carefully in the light of what Senator Townley has said, particularly leading up to an election when Ministers of the Government and the leaders of the Opposition will be engaged, as will all members of Parliament, in the campaign. I believe the matter that was raised ought to be given some consideration and inquiries made through the Attorney- General to discover whether ASIO is on strike, in effect, in certain areas, affecting the security and safety of Ministers of the Government and members of the Parliament in the time leading up to the election.
