Debate resumed from 13 September, on motion by Senator Gareth Evans:

That the Bill be now read a second time.

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT (Senator Colston) —Is it the wish of the Senate that the Appropriation (Parliamentary Departments) Bill, Appropriation Bill (No. 1), Appropriation Bill (No. 2) and the Advance to the Minister for Finance be debated cognately?

Senator Walters-I gather that speeches on all the matters are in order now and later we will ask questions in the Committee stage. Is that correct?

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Yes, that is correct.

Senator Walters-So the Bills are being debated cognately?

The ACTING DEPUTY PRESIDENT —Yes. Separate questions will be put on each Bill. Is it the wish of the Senate that all the matters be debated cognately? There being no objection, I will allow that course to be followed.
