Senator JACK EVANS(4.38) —I thank the Minister for Industry and Commerce (Senator Button) for his assurance and indicate that the Australian Democrats will be opposing the amendment. We see no point at all in having a body such as the IAC haring off in a variety of directions when the Government has to make the final determination as to whether it will move on any of those items the IAC might refer to itself for investigation.

Senator Watson —Does that take economic circumstances into account?

Senator JACK EVANS —If we were talking about a different kind of body, that might be appropriate. For a body which has the responsibility for investigating those areas which are of concern to the Government before it determines its policy on those areas, it becomes irrelevant for the IAC to examine those areas which are of no interest to the Government. We will not support the Opposition's amendment.
