Senator PETER RAE(3.27) —by leave-I move:

That the Senate take note of both reports.

In doing so I very briefly congratulate the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Government Operations on continuing what I believe to be a most important task to have been undertaken in the past and on having added to the continuous listing of the existing statutory authorities. It has now prepared a list of just over 300 non-statutory bodies. I look forward to the further work that the Committee may do in relation to the identification of those bodies and of some guidelines and rules in relation to them. It is obviously an area which has received relatively little attention as it has grown over the years and it is of bipartisan concern to ensure that there is some rationale in relation to what is done with regard to the development of such bodies. Some attention needs to be paid to what they are, what they do and whether they should continue to do it in the way in which they have done in the past. With those few comments I seek leave to continue my remarks later.

Leave granted; debate adjourned.
