Senator GRIMES (Minister for Social Security)(10.43) —As Senator Martin said, the previous Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs said, and in fact the present Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (Mr West) has said, that this section of the Australian Citizenship Amendment Bill will not come into effect until we have uniform State legislation. Of course other changes will need to be made to various references in other legislation-I have no idea of the number or the details. Departments and Ministers will be made aware of that and we will proceed with those changes. In fact, it is my understanding that the planning is proceeding in that regard already. We certainly have no intention of doing it in a hotchpotch way, as the honourable senator would accept. The intention is that when we get that uniform legislation in other areas the section will be proclaimed.
