Senator MARTIN —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Is it a fact that until recently the front cover of Australian passports carried the Australian crest, the words 'Australia' and 'Passport' and the image of a crown? Is it a fact that Australian passports currently being issued no longer have an image of the crown? Why did the Government decide to change the passport cover format?

Senator GARETH EVANS —It is always a pleasure to hear a politician on the wave length of the community she purports to represent. I am sure that the good burghers of the Gold Coast will be fascinated to learn that their candidate regards this as the kind of measure to justify concern in the national Parliament. It is a measure of just how little there is to be concerned about in the way the country is presently being governed. I have no idea whatsoever what the present cover of passports might look like. I will find out from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, who has much more recent experience than I of that situation, and give the honourable senator advice accordingly.
