Senator JACK EVANS(4.12) —Whilst the Australian Democrats have a degree of sympathy for the case put by Senator Messner, we see the potential for 'loophole-ism' rearing its ugly head once again. After many years of the deliberate insertion of taxation loopholes into the Income Tax Assessment Act, we are very concerned that a last-minute insertion of a possible loophole such as this into a new area would do more harm than it might do good. We are willing to consider this matter. In fact, we believe that it is something that the Commissioner of Taxation should study with the object of the matter being brought before the Parliament again in the next session. But we would like some pretty firm assurances from the Commissioner of Taxation that it did not do the thing that I fear it might well do. For that reason, at this stage the Democrats will be voting against the Liberal amendment.
